Victorian Trades Hall Council has today welcomed the Allan Labor Government's plan to protect Victorian workers from harmful workplace surveillance at the hands of bad bosses.

The current workplace surveillance laws have not been updated since 2006, before the iPhone was released, and is in urgent need of modernisation.

These new laws come off the back of a five year long campaign by Victorian workers to ensure new technologies are properly regulated and workers right to privacy is protected in law.

“Workplace surveillance has long been a concern for workers, but with the use of AI and cheap monitoring technologies, some employers have recklessly embraced this practice at the expense of workplace privacy.”

"81% of workers who reported being surveilled were not included in discussions with their employer about the extent, purpose or use of surveillance – let alone provided with detailed disclosure. It’s just not good enough."
