Unionists for Treaty
Treaty puts First Peoples in charge of decisions that affect First Peoples, rather than State politicians. Self-determination is something all unionists understand - because it's what we fight for in our workplaces!
There are some fringe groups in Victoria who oppose equality for First Nations peoples, and who are spreading mistruths to stir up division and opposition to treaty. They hope that if they focus all our attention on a treaty bogeyman, we’ll be too distracted to campaign for other issues our state is facing – public transport, our jobs, our kids’ schools, our home payments, our grocery bills.
We can overcome this fear campaign by talking to our communities about the divisive motives of these extremists and calmly answering peoples’ questions about treaty. We don’t need to be lawyers or politicians to know the simple truth – that all of us have a right to be heard on the issues that affect us. Politicians must always listen respectfully to community.
