LGBTI Victorians, allies and unionists are today celebrating an historic YES vote for marriage equality, with 61.6% of Australians saying ‘yes’ to fairness, compassion, equality and love in the marriage law survey.
Tonight, unionists and the LGBTI community will come together on Lygon Street Carlton outside Trades Hall to celebrate this historic achievement and mark the clearing of one more hurdle in the campaign toward marriage equality.
Quotes attributable to Wil Stracke, Victorian Trades Hall Council:
‘Today is a huge day for marriage equality in Australia. Not only because of the 61.6% support for marriage equality, but because a proud, strong LGBTI community has survived this terrible process.’
‘Tonight we’ll celebrate, laugh, cry and console each other. Tomorrow, we’ll work to ensure a bill that delivers marriage equality without reducing protections from discrimination for LGBTI people is brought before the Parliament and voted on as a matter of urgency.’
‘Enough of the games, enough of the delays, enough of the state-sanctioned homophobia and transphobia. The Australian people have spoken, and they want marriage equality. It is incumbent on all MPs to make sure that happens as soon as possible.’
