During Budget week, we're joining the Australian Unemployed Workers Union in rallying outside Treasurer Josh Frydenberg's office to 'celebrate' the 25th birthday of Newstart last being raised in any real terms.
Newstart is $243 per week below the poverty line and has stagnated for 25 years as rent, food, utilities, and general cost-of-living have continued to skyrocket.
The attitude of the Liberal government has been "let them eat cake", so we'll be bringing a cake with 25 candles for each successive year that Newstart has failed to keep up with cost of living.
On Thursday April 4th, join us in calling for something we can really celebrate - a Newstart rate which allows people decent living conditions and dignity as they search for work.
