VICTORIAN TRADES HALL COUNCIL ENDORSES MELBOURNE METRO RAIL PROJECT
The Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) welcomes the Andrews’ Government’s timely commitment to constructing the Melbourne Metro Rail Tunnel.
Secretary Luke Hilakari said the project would “give a much-needed shot in the arm for construction work in Victoria.
“The Baillieu and Napthine Liberal Governments’ inaction on public infrastructure over 4 years was a disaster for Victorian jobs.
“Over 200,000 Victorians are currently out of work. Victorian workers are relieved to see a Government not just talking a big game on jobs, but actually starting work to fast-track an employment recovery.
“Between the announcement today of the rail project, and yesterday’s announcement of the level crossing removals, we’re seeing a Government that is working to fix Victoria’s jobs crisis, and that’s encouraging”.
But Trades Hall also acknowledged that the project would meet difficulty without Federal Funding.
“We call on the Federal Government to overcome what seems like an arbitrary objection to rail projects and listen to Victorians. Victorians need the Metro Rail, we need the jobs, and we need the Federal Government to come to the table.”
