Victorian Union members are supporting workers in Burma [aka Myanmar] who are building a new worker-led union for bakery workers after local union activists were dismissed.
We aim to raise $2000 which will go towards a union campaign pack to travel from Australia to Burma at the end of February. This will include training modules, videos from Burmese-Australian unionists working in Australia, hands on support and money to get this new union up and running!
One union leader helping emerging unions in Burma is Thurein Aung. Thurein visited Australia last year and visited union workplaces to exchange ideas and build international solidarity. Thurein Aung was arrested in 2007 for organising a May Day rally and received a 28 year sentence, which was condemned internationally.
We raised $3779.20 for the Burma Bakers!
This campaign is now suspended. Thanks for building a bakers union in Burma!
