16 Days Feminism at the Hall – Fundraiser Screening of 'The Janes'

Abortion is healthcare. The recent Queensland election, vote in South Australia and winding back of rights in the USA have shown us that we can't slow down the fight for reproductive rights.

Around Australia, access to abortion and contraception services can be a postcode lottery. Queensland has just elected a Premier who voted against the decriminalisation of abortion in 2018.

This November through #16DaysofActivism we're taking action in solidarity with women and people who can get pregnant and our right to bodily autonomy and choices regarding our reproductive health.

We Are Union Women are hosting a screening of the 2022 HBO documentary, 'The Janes' in Solidarity Hall. Come down, grab a drink with sisters and comrades - together we'll watch this shocking yet inspiring documentary.

All funds raised go to Children by Choice Queensland - assisting Queenslanders with reproductive health since 1972.

More about The Janes:

In the spring of 1972, police raided an apartment on the South Side of Chicago where seven women who were part of a clandestine network were arrested and charged. Using code names, fronts, and safe houses to protect themselves and their work, the accused had built an underground service for women seeking safe, affordable, illegal abortions. They called themselves "Jane."

Directed by Oscar-nominee Tia Lessin and Emmy-nominee Emma Pildes, The Janes offers first-hand accounts from the women at the center of the group, many speaking on the record for the first time.

The Janes tells the story of a group of unlikely outlaws risking their lives to help women in need. In the pre-Roe v. Wade era – a time when abortion or even circulating information about abortion was a felony in Illinois – the Janes provided low-cost and free abortions to an estimated 11,000 women.

Rotten tomatoes rating: 100%!

It is essential that we stand together and show our support. Abortion is healthcare. Full stop. End of story. See you there!
