For unionists, it is more urgent than ever that we campaign for climate action and hold governments to account. Workers are already on the frontlines of climate change – we protect and rebuild communities affected by natural disasters, we give care to those affected by heatwaves and bushfire smoke, and we’re working in increasingly extreme weather.
This course will teach you how unionists can climate proof workplaces, and drive climate action campaigns.
This course is open to union activists based in Victoria/Melbourne. THIS COURSE WILL BE RUN IN PERSON AT TRADES HALL WITH COVID SAFE PRACTICES IN PLACE.
This course comprises four discrete modules broadly covering the science behind climate change, the policy solutions, why climate change matters for workers, and how workers/unionists can become agents in climate change campaigns, including campaigns for a just energy transition. There is a focus on developing industrial tools which, integrated with WHS legislation and organising strategies, effectively assist workers in climate-proofing their workplaces.
Key Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course participants will be able to:
Explain why action on climate is urgent and why workers need to be involved in education and action around climate change.
Identify the impact climate change is already having on workplaces and how unions have responded to date.
Identify the opportunities and risks around energy transition.
Frame climate change as a critical issue for unionists and confidently address workers’ fears and doubts so climate messaging is consistent across the movement.
Integrate WHS and industrial strategies into organising and campaigning around climate change at work.
Please note: this course is also being offered in October as single modules delivered every Tuesday night from 6:30pm till 8pm. If you would prefer this timing, please click here to RSVP.
