Sunday Penalty Rates
The Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) welcomes the Andrews’ Government meeting its election commitment to once again recognise Easter Sunday as a public holiday.
Secretary Luke Hilakari said “When workers sacrifice holidays, penalty rates give fair compensation.
“The former Liberal Government’s decision to remove trading restrictions for Easter Sunday without simultaneously gazetting the day as a public holiday forced many workers to work without proper compensation.
“Easter Sunday is not like any other Sunday. It’s a day of religious observance for some, and an important day traditionally spent with family for many more. It’s entirely appropriate that, if a Victorian worker is required to work on Easter Sunday, they are paid at full public holiday rates.
“The hundreds of thousands of Victorians who rely on penalty rates to make ends meet will certainly welcome this announcement.
“This is a common-sense solution to a ludicrous double-standard introduced by the previous government.”
